Even in the age of digital downloads and MP3’s, music stores are surviving, if not thriving.  And it’s not only the “old-fashioned” CD stores that are finding success, but also private music teachers, instrument retailers, and more.  It seems like a good time to be targeting music lovers.

The CD: an Ancient Artifact?  Far From it

“CDs are necessarily like a ‘master’ copy of a record, compared to any digital file format,” said Marc Weinstein, co-owner and co-founder of Amoeba Music, an independent music store with locations in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Berkeley.

Music lovers have turned Amoeba Music into a popular destination; a California haven for those longing for the days of CD artwork and physical, tangible music.  Despite the migration to digital downloads, brick-and-mortar independent stores serve as community gathering places for music lovers.

A Grander Scale of Music

Carol Cook and John Giovannoni wanted a way to share their love of music with their Chicago community.  “I felt I wanted to do something on a grander scale,” said Cook, who has a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Colorado in Greeley.

“I wanted to go into business and create a place where adults and children could experience a variety of music.”  The two opened The Music Room, a multiroom center that provides music lessons, retail instrument sales, and more.  Chicagoans that are passionate about music have been flocking to The Music Room in droves.  Annual sales, including lessons and merchandise, are between $300,000 and $500,000.
