At GbBIS, we believe that the most accurate mapping data can help solve a variety of problems. NASA’s fleet of Earth-observing satellites provides scientists with standardized scientific data—information crucial for tracking the health of the world’s forests. Countries like Brazil are using data from NASA satellites to track and measure their forests in advance of a United Nations effort to reduce climate change. Using NASA’s data, a map of the world’s rainforests can help scientists and local governments track and eliminate deforestation.
Using images and data acquired by Landsat satellites is quickly becoming the accepted approach for anyone hoping to have a long-term view of the health of the world’s forests.
“For example:Brazilis using Landsat data from 1996 to 2005 to create a baseline for tracking future forest coverage,” says Doug Morton, a NASA Landsat researcher at the NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center inGreenbelt,MD. Consistently gathering data about our planet since 1972, the Landsat Program is a series of Earth observing satellite missions jointly managed by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey.
“Data from satellites like Landsat have really changed the dynamic of deforestation in the last five to 10 years,” Morton says.
Forestmonitoring activities in developing countries depend on guaranteed continuity and open access to satellite data, says Inge Jonckheere of the UN-REDD Programme at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N. “It allows them to learn and apply existing image processing techniques in order to become autonomous in monitoring their own forest nationally,” Jonckheere says. “Landsat data therefore has been crucial in our work so far, which was mainly focused on the assessment of deforestation.”
NASA satellite data is used to map carbon, tree height, and active microwave data (rom NASA’s Quick Scatterometer satellite and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) in the world’s rainforests.
