World’s Longest Train Tunnel to be Completed in 2016

Crossing the Alpsis about to become a little bit easier.  AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd is the company in charge of creating the world’s largest train tunnel.  The NEAT Gotthard Base tunnel is located near Erstfeld in Switzerlandand should become operational at the end of 2016. The project consists of two parallel single track tunnels, each of a length of 57 km (35 miles).  Its main purpose is to increase total transport capacity across the Alps, notably between Germanyand Italy, and to lessen the amount of environmental damage done by freight trucks by shifting more services from truck to train. A secondary benefit will be to cut the journey time for passenger trains from Zurich to Milan by about an hour and from Zürich to Lugano to 1 hour 40 minutes.  The tunnel’s excavation was completed in 2011 and the construction of the railway system should be finished by 2016.

While the largest train tunnel in the world won’t be operational for another couple of years, Swiss businesses will have to update their transportation data to account for the Gotthard train tunnel.  A new transportation system will vastly change the demographics and vehicle traffic in an area, and create new opportunities for both large corporations and small businesses.  That is why having the most up-to-date transportation data at your disposal is vital for businesses.
